Yoga in its Context of Indian Philosophies

Teacher: Dr. Satya Narayan Das

Tuesday, March 24th, 8-9:30pm
Cost: pre-registration $10, $15 at the door

Yoga is one of the most important systems among the schools of Indian philosophies. While most other systems delve into metaphysics, yoga delineates the psychosomatic technique of meditative practice to alleviate the miseries faced by human beings. Being practical in approach, its methodology is accepted by most of the schools of philosophies in some way or the other. Therefore, it is important to grasp the philosophy of yoga for practitioners of any school.

Dr. Satya Naraya Das holds an M.Tech degree from IIT Delhi and a PhD in Sanskrit (Agra University), as well as eight additional shastric degrees in various subjects. He is the author of 15 books related to Indian culture and philosophy. Vedic Chanting Course

Teacher: Guta Hedewig

Four Week Series
Mondays April 20, 27, May 4, 11 from 2:30 - 3:30PM
Cost: $50 for yoga teachers/$100 full price

Vedic Chanting is the ancient art of transmitting the Veda-s orally, from teacher to student, in a strictly prescribed way. This practice hones your listening skills tremendously, improves memory, works to extend the breath fully, and can lead to a deep meditative state.

We will review and refine the six main rules of Vedic Chanting, including going over the Sanskrit alphabet.

We will learn Laghunyasa (‘Agnirme’) from the Yajur Veda, a chant for health. This chant talks about the interconnectedness of body, senses, mind (citta), energy, and awareness (cit). We will also go over the Ganesh Chant, 'Ganapati Praarthana,' including pathas and continue with Yoga Sutra recitation.

Guta Hedewig has studied the teachings of Krishnamacharya, including the Yoga Sutra-s of Patanjali and Vedic Chanting, with TKV Desikachar and Kausthub Desikachar at the Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram and the affiliate Vedavani (Vedic Chanting School) in Chennai, India. She is a certified teacher through the Krishnamacharya Healing & Yoga Foundation and is currently enrolled in their 4-year-long Yoga Therapy Program.

Core Vinyasa Krama Training

Teacher: Srivatsa Ramaswami

20 Hour Course
Sat/Sun August 1st & 2nd and Sat/Sun August 8th & 9th, from 11:00AM - 5:00PM all days (incl. one hour break)
Cost: $400

Vinyasa Krama Yoga is an ancient practice of physical and spiritual development. It is a systematic method to study, practice, teach, and adapt yoga. This Vinyasa Krama (movement and sequence methodology) approach to Yoga Asana practice is unique in all of yoga. The legendary 20th-century yogi Sri T. Krishnamacharya, Srivatsa Ramaswami's guru of 30 years, brought this method of yoga back to use and prominence. By integrating the functions of mind, body, and breath in the same time frame, a practitioner can experience the real joy of yoga practice. Each of the important postures is practiced with many elaborate vinyasas (variations and movements). Each variation is linked to the next one by a succession of specific transitional movements, synchronized with the breath. The mind closely follows the slow, smooth, deliberate Ujjayi yogic breathing, and the yoking of mind and body takes place with the breath acting as the harness.

Several hundred vinyasas of varying levels of difficulty contained in ten classical sequences will be taught, including Surya Namaskara with mantras, salutations to the Directions and others. Further, important yogic breathing exercises, like Kapalabhati and vinyasas of pranayama, will be explored in depth. Teachers can add considerably to their knowledge base of yogasana practice.

Srivatsa Ramaswami was the longest standing student of T Krishnamacharya outside the Master's family. He has studied the classic Yoga texts extensively and mastered Vinyasa Krama, Vedic Chanting, and Yoga Therapy. Mr. Ramaswami has written four books: "Basic Tenets of Patanjala Yoga," "Yoga for the Three Stages of Life," "The Complete Book of Vinyasa Yoga," and "Yoga Beneath the Surface." He has also recorded about 40 audio cassettes and CDs in India of various Sanskrit chants like Sun Salutation, Gayatrii, Siva Kavacham, etc. He has been teaching for more than 25 years in India: for 20 years at Kalakshetra (recognized as an Institution of National Importance by the Govt. of India); at Ramachandra Medical University; at Yoga Brotherhood; and at other institutions. In the US, Mr. Ramaswami is teaching workshops and Teacher Training Programs at Esalen Institute, Loyola Marymount University, Chicago Yoga Center and several others centers.
